T1 Trip to Silverstone Interactive Museum 2022

T1 visited the Silverstone Interactive Museum as part of their topic on transport. The museum is a thrilling journey through the past, present and future of British motor sport. The children climbed into a racing car, learned to be a commentator and had a go at building a racing bike.

The Interactive Museum brought the science behind the sport to life - and the children touched and tested, as well as heard from engineers themselves. They were also able to learn about dampers, count up the number of buttons on a modern steering wheel and explore why there are different tyre compounds.

The children learned about the incredible technology that goes into racing and tested their knowledge on a series of interactive challenges. Their final challenge was to put together their own racing bike using what they had learned. In the Tech Lab, the children found out how hard it was to push down the brake pedal on a Grand Prix car, took hold of a modern steering wheel to discover all the buttons and worked out exactly what a wind tunnel does with the mini replica.

The children realised that there is more to motor racing than the action you see on the track and Race Day gave them an insight into everything that goes on behind the scenes. They walked up to the replica pit wall and got close to amazing racing cars and a support vehicle. From race marshals to the medical centre, they heard first-hand accounts of what is needed to run a busy race day. The children also had the chance to run on to the racing track and stand in front of the iconic Lewis Hamilton mural.
