As part of their exciting topic on Romans and upcoming play, 'Roman Britain Re-written', Form 1 embarked on a fascinating journey into the world of ancient Rome through an immersive Roman Day workshop with History Off the Page. Transported back in time to a bustling Roman fort, the children were captivated by a vivid recreation of daily life during that era and took part in a variety of hands-on activities.
Throughout the day, they became skilled artisans: lamp, leather, and metal workers, wax tablet and mosaic makers, scribes, fresco painters, beauticians, and charm makers, each role bringing the ancient world to life in a tangible and memorable way. They were joined by their teachers and parent helpers.
Hinsley Hall was transformed into a vibrant Roman villa near a Roman-occupied town during the Boudican revolt of 60 AD, where the children eagerly stepped into character as apprentices, perfecting their crafts, trading their wares, and sharing the latest gossip from the empire. Through role-play, mystery-solving, and handling authentic Roman replica artefacts, they gained a deep understanding of Roman culture and daily life.
I made a little pouch to keep secrets in, just like the Romans did!
Dressed as Roman citizens, slaves, and even barbarians, the children truly immersed themselves in the past. As news of Boudica’s fierce victories including the destruction of Colchester, London, St Albans, and the formidable IX Legion spread through Hinsley Hall, curiosity and excitement filled the air. The young Romans were left wondering: what would become of their fort, and how would they fare amid the revolt?
It was a day of discovery, creativity, and imagination the perfect inspiration as Form 1 dive deeper into their topic and prepare for their play.
