St John’s Charities Committee once again sprinkled festive cheer throughout the school as children and staff warmly welcomed local care home residents to our annual Christmas party. This much-loved event remains a cherished St John’s tradition, celebrating kindness, community and connection.
Committee members from both Byron House and Senior House brought real joy to the afternoon, offering lively conversation, thoughtful hosting and plenty of entertainment. Our wonderful catering team prepared mince pies, cakes, sandwiches and drinks, while pupils created beautiful table displays and guided guests across the playground and into the hall with bright smiles and a warm welcome.
It is so important for our pupils to give back to the local community. When different generations come together, sharing stories and experiences, it creates a sense of belonging and continuity. The children learn that their voices and actions can bring joy, while the residents remind us of the richness of lives already lived. That exchange is truly invaluable.
Festive music filled the hall as the Senior House Chamber Choir, Byron House Chamber Choir and Junior Choir performed uplifting seasonal pieces. The afternoon ended with everyone joining together to sing favourite Christmas classics with 'We Wish You a Merry Christmas' providing a perfect finale.
Before departing, each guest received a Christmas gift generously donated by St John’s families, bringing the celebration to a heartwarming close.
I loved being on the Charities Committee because it meant I could help make the Christmas party really special for the local residents. Seeing them smile when we sang and gave them presents made me feel like we were giving them a big Christmas hug.
