In the final week of the Lent term we were delighted to welcome pupils, staff and parents from Haileybury for our annual Jazz Evening, a much‑loved celebration of musical talent, collaboration and the joy of live performance. The event brought both school communities together in a vibrant atmosphere of shared enthusiasm, and it set the stage for a night filled with energy, creativity and exceptional musicianship.
Haileybury's Schola Cantorum, Sax Quartet and Big Band performed various classic numbers in the first half of the evening. It was genuinely inspiring for our pupils to watch older musicians performing with such confidence, discipline and artistry. Seeing peers only a few years ahead of them handle complex arrangements, communicate so expressively and command the stage with such assurance offered our young musicians a powerful glimpse of what is possible with dedication and passion.
After the interval, the SJCS Big Band joined forces with the Haileybury Big Band for a wonderfully energetic ABBA medley that immediately lifted the atmosphere in the hall. Solo and choral interpretations of 'Lullaby of Birdland' followed, showcasing the warmth and musical sensitivity of the SJCS Senior Chamber Choir. Our pupils continued to shine throughout the second half with a series of solos and Rednotes ensemble pieces, ranging from Grease and Fame to a vibrant Madonna number.
Each performance demonstrated not only musical skill but real stage presence and confidence. They gave an outstanding account of themselves under the inspirational direction of Mr Lepage-Dean, whose leadership brought out both the individuality of the vocal solos and the cohesion of the Rednotes ensemble.

The evening showcased incredible performances from both schools, with pupils coming together to deliver a vibrant and energetic set, highlighting their musical skills and love for non-classical styles. Their shared passion for music made it a truly special event. (Director of Music, Mr Kirk)
