We are delighted to share that St John’s has been commended in the Independent School of the Year Awards for Performing Arts, a wonderful achievement in a year that saw a record number of nominations.
This recognition celebrates the creativity, commitment and enthusiasm of our pupils and staff, and reflects the central role that music, drama and dance play in life at St John’s.
Performing arts opportunities are woven throughout the school experience, with every pupil encouraged to discover and develop their talents. From dance lessons and outstanding choreography to drama productions for every year group, pupils enjoy a rich and varied programme that nurtures confidence, creativity and self-expression. Recent highlights have included our acclaimed production of 'The Pirates of Penzance', while excitement is already building for this year’s production of 'Honk! Jr.'
Drama continues to thrive through much-loved traditions such as the Year 8 Latin Play, written and performed by our pupils, as well as 'potted' Leavers' Shakespeare plays that bring classic texts to life in imaginative and engaging ways. The Passion Play remains a significant rite of passage for our Year 8s, encouraging reflection, teamwork and a strong sense of community.
Music is equally at the heart of school life. Informal lunchtime concerts provide regular opportunities for young musicians to perform and build confidence, while our choirs and choristers play a leading role in the Advent and Christmas services held in the beautiful surroundings of St John’s College Chapel. These special occasions bring together pupils, families and staff in celebration and reflection.
Another highlight of the year is the much-anticipated West Road Summer Concert, showcasing the breadth of musical talent across the school, including performances by our Symphony Orchestra. These events demonstrate not only musical excellence but also the dedication and enthusiasm of our pupils.
Beyond the performances themselves, the performing arts equip pupils with invaluable life skills. Through rehearsing, performing and creating together, pupils develop confidence, resilience, communication, teamwork, leadership and problem-solving abilities. They learn to take creative risks, support one another, respond constructively to feedback and perform with poise before an audience.
We are immensely proud of everyone who contributes to the vibrant culture of performing arts at St John’s and grateful for the many opportunities our pupils have to discover confidence, collaboration and joy through performance.
