The trip involved using role play to empathise with a child evacuated from London in the 1940s, and to understand the feelings and experiences of evacuees, including a gas mask drill and an air raid, as well as to learn about the impact of the Second World War on home life in the countryside, school lessons and play.

The script was designed to be fun-loving and playful and the cast, involving the whole year group, included a class of lively children on dress-up day and their patient teacher, grumbling residents and a pirate family with a heart of gold. The play was performed ‘in the round’ which added an extra complexity the children reacted well to as they had to ‘turn out’ so all sides of the audience could see and hear them.

Form 3 pupils at St John's perform RATS!

Form 3's Production of 'Rats!' 2023

May 2023
Form 3 gave us their wonderful rendition of Rats!, making their debut on the Hinsley Hall stage. A funky interpretation of a traditional tale, Rats! retells the classic story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin with music and choreographed dancing. It was the invention of the children beyond the score composed by Nigel Hess that gave this show its star quality. Faced with a musical made up entirely of singing, the children workshopped their own imaginative ideas in lessons, adding more colour to the production.
